- Pull out sufficient length of tape to wrap around the girth of the package (the girth is the distance all the way around the package at its widest point perpendicular to the length).
- Once the tape is wrapped around the package insert the metal clip into the case slot opposite where the tape emerges from the case (be careful the tape does not get twisted).
- An alternative technique is to pull out sufficient tape, insert metal clip into case slot, then loop the tape around the package girth.
- Push the retract button to automatically tighten the tape around the girth, and allow the flat top of the case to rest against any surface of the package. (fig.1)
- The girth measurement is indicated at the point where the tape emerges from the case. Mark this position by holding the tape here between thumb and forefinger (fig.2), and then pull out an additional length of tape from the case to measure the package length (the metal clip can remain in the slot while taking this measurement). (fig.3)
- The total of the two measurements indicates the proper package classification and categorized by the tape as either "Standard," "Additional handling." "0S1," "0S2," "0S3," or "MAXIMUM." (fig.4)
The outside of the tape is used to obtain these dimensional measurements, while the inside of the tape is used to take linear measurements like a normal tape measure.
